Conditions of Participation

Scope

These Conditions of Participation shall apply to the conference SGAS/SSEA & VAD Conference 2026 ‘African Perspectives on Global Transformations’ (hereinafter “Conference”) organized by the Center for African Studies of the University of Basel (hereinafter the “Organizers”). By registering for the Conference, the registering person (hereinafter “Participant”) acknowledges to have read, understood, and unconditionally agrees with the following Conditions of Participation.

Conference fee

With the payment of the Conference fee, the Participant acquires the right to participate in the individual events (e.g. plenary session, workshop) of the Conference.

Cancellation policy

Registrations cancelled before or on 31 July 2026 are eligible for a 50% refund of the registration fee.

For cancellations made after 31 July 2026 no Conference fees will be refunded, except the participant finds a substitute. In that case an administration fee of CHF 50 has to be paid. Cancellation of registration must be made in writing (e-mail to sgas-vad-2026@unibas.ch) as soon as possible.

Changes and Conference cancellation

The Organizers reserve the right to make changes to the program at short notice (venue, schedule, speakers, content) in the interest of quality assurance and/or the organization and feasibility of the Conference.

If the Conference cannot be held on site due to factors beyond the influence of the Organizers, it will be held online. Participants will be informed in due course and the Conference fees may be adjusted.

The Organizers reserve the right to cancel the Conference in case of insufficient number of Participants up to 4 weeks before the start of the Conference, in which case Conference fees already paid will be refunded in full.

Photography and filming

The Organizers plan to conduct audio recording, filming and photography at the Conference for use in reporting and in educational or promotional materials in print, electronic or other media, including their websites and social media channels. If a participant does not agree to this, he or she shall inform the Organizers.

Participants list

The list of all Participants will be available to the registered Participants and will be included in the reporting. This list will include the name and affiliation of Participants.

Conduct during the Conference

The Participant must refrain from discriminatory conduct and disruptive behavior during the Conference, including behaviors which may endanger the health or safety of other Participants or would be detrimental to the rights or other interests of the Organizers. Audio or video reproductions of the Conference are not allowed without prior written authorization from the Organizers. The Participant must comply with any instructions issued by the Organizers in the context of the Conference.

Changes of the Conditions of Participation

The Organizers reserve the right to change these Conditions of Participation at their own discretion. Any material change will be communicated to the Participant via email or by any other means deemed appropriate by the Organizers.

Applicable law and jurisdiction

These Conditions of Participation shall be exclusively governed by and construed in accordance with Swiss law.

Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Conditions of Participation shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Basel-Stadt, Switzerland.
